Thanks for answering my question Dan (although I wish I didn’t read it at 4am after one of my girls woke me as thinking of Scott didn’t help me sleep), I can confirm that for me at least ‘In Your Corner’ has its desired effect.

I had a similar experience to you with the news of Scott’s passing. I vividly remember reading his final tweet as the last thing I did before going to sleep and hoping everything was okay before waking to the missing posters. Then once it was confirmed I was one of those who had to head to work and try and explain why I was upset to people who didn’t understand.

There was just something about Scott where he put some much of his brutal self into everything he did from his lyrics to his stage presence, his interviews and his drawings. This meant you didn’t need to know Scott to ‘know Scott’ and I think that is why it hurt so much, if you could relate to anything he was feeling you felt it too. I was lucky enough to see them multiple times live and they were electric. What I wouldn’t give to feel the pulsing heartbeat of the crowd singing along to The Loneliness and the Scream one last time. Unfortunately I missed his last show in Australia as it was the night my first daughter was due, it has always felt like there was something strangely poetic about that.

Thankfully through a very active FR community and many artists like yourself (also Frank Turner and Big Red Machine just to name a few) honouring Scott we can see that we aren’t alone in that corner. I also have my 5 year old German Short Haired Pointer Scottie (Scotland when she in trouble) to help.

I was just listening on Saturday afternoon to "In Your Corner" while driving back into Chicago, and got all teary-eyed thinking of Scott and the lasting songs he left us. I saw him play the entirety of Midnight Organ Fight at Thalia Hall three months before he died. He had the entire room in the palm of his hand. He was a singular voice: he could make you laugh about the heaviness, and make you cry about the lightness. I relate to your experience with Bowie and Prince's deaths: theirs felt like tragedies, significant but ordinary. Scott's death felt—still feels—wrong. In a cosmic sense. The universe fucking up.

Thank you for "In Your Corner." Anyone who connected with Scott's songs can connect with it, and take some comfort in that connection. When you released it, I shared it with the biggest Frightened Rabbit fan I know and she became an instant fan of your music because of it. ❤️

Beautifully expressed Dan. Know that if anything were ever to happen to you, your fans would feel that same kinship you did with Scott. Whether you know us or not (you may have more glimpses than Scott did) we definitely get to feel a lot of what you share.

What a wonderful question and answer. The way you describe the feeling you got when you heard the message about Scott is exactly how I've felt it back then. Still gives me goosebumps when I think about it - and I'm not even a groupie or an enormous fan; just enjoying their music. Strange how that works. Thanks for 'In Your Corner' - it's a wonderful honour for a wonderful man.

Your song is strikingly good; it is immediately clear what you’re talking about without being overt. The tone, lyrics, and melody all match up.

Have you tried fiddling with Woodpile? A stripped-down Mangan version of it would be a nice pairing with Corner, though I understand if that seems uncomfortable to do.
