Not that I don’t believe it could have happened. Trust that if I said those words, it was my own insecurities at play. I was likely deep in the muck of my own head.
Ahh, this just makes my heart swell! The difference between being a great artist and being an impactful one is crowd engagement. How cool is it to hear that a human being invites, welcomes, and accepts other human beings while at their best and in their own skin?! Keep up the great work, Dan!
I was at your show in Saskatoon recently, and it was the first time I've experienced this - inviting people to not just sing along, but to be the song. It was powerful in a way that I couldn't put into words... But you've done it so beautifully here:
"There are many elements at play - that the whole can be greater than the sum of the parts; that humans naturally tune to each other; that there is power in numbers; that we can lose our inhibitions when given permission to do so."
This experience of harmony or unity or whatever it is, in a room filled with strangers, actually did make me "feel like despite the evidence otherwise, the pros of existing truly do outweigh the cons. That things are possible."
I remember once when a singer said that the singing along was great but the clapping beat was throwing him off. I don’t recall who it was.
Dan played 3 shows at the Dream Cafe in Penticton, where the crowd can easily upset the apple cart. Even though it seats only 110 people, the venue is so intimate that people can just reach out and snatch the show and make themselves part of it…. It is what adds charm to the shows there but also gets a little annoying when people feel the need to be part of the show.
I can't wait until I get to go to one of your shows, Dan. You have quite a few songs that I feel on a deeper level than just hearing words and music. I actually discovered you on a Playlist at one of my least favorite jobs and that song was always one that lifted my spirits no matter how badly I was in the trenches 🤭
I love this idea of "we should feel like we want to do things." I'm heading across the border tonight to play a show and I'll keep this sentiment/wish close as I head on stage. Thanks, Dan.

You must be doing something right, because we keep coming back for that experience. See you in Tofino in November.
