Hello love,
I recently wrote an exhaustive piece about merch commissions for Talkhouse. In it, I unpack what they are, how they became the norm within the music industry, and a fairly simple solution that would make touring a more equitable venture.
In short: most venues take a percentage of merch sales at concerts for no reason and it’s making touring less viable for many artists.
It’s likely a tad “inside baseball” for many, but indie artists have been protesting this practice as of late, and I saw an opportunity to vent some pressure from my overflowing reservoir of opinions on the matter.
I’ve also announced a solo show in Saskatoon on May 17th at Capitol Music Club. You can expect some fun and slightly random gig announcements from me as 2024 comes into focus.
And music. I’ve got lots of exciting music up my sleeve to roll out. Of course, by exciting, I really mean tonally-melancholic-but-fostering-feelings-of-shared-context-for-the-universal-experience-with-insightfully-uplifting-undertones. More on that soon.
And Europe! I’m coming for you! Dates below.
Thank you for your eyes and your ears.

My daughter addressed this in a panel discussion at her Wintersong 2024 Music Festival. Wintersong will never take a merch cut. This year I stocked up on posters, vinyls and CDs from Hungry Lake and Pony Girl. How I wish you’d been there again, Dan Mangan.
