Dying of Exposure with Dan Mangan
Episode 5: Shad - “Commit to the thing”
Hear my chat with mega-talent Shad about family, art, hip hop and the music business.
Among other things, we chat about his family’s displacement throughout Africa before settling in Canada, Shad’s scary realization that music mattered to him, supporting Common as a young rapper, sidestepping the word “artist” and focusing on whatever sounds fun, the fortuitous timing of “Hip Hop Evolution”, the shifting sands of the music industry, and how your kids don’t give a crap about your career.
This episode features a surprise needle drop of “Morgana” by Hank May.

Love the chat with Shad. The old clip from Catfish or whatever reminded me so much of what you said about just impersonating your heroes. All I heard was Dream Warriors. Then you mentioned Postcards. Of course you know how dear it is to so many fans I and I know you still play some of that because of it. I was shocked at a recent Sarah McLachlan concert for her to say "I haven't listened or played anything from my first 2 albums in 25 years". Like Vox or Drawn to the Rhythm or anything off Solace is not worthy. That's a shame. Not that picking a setlist at this point isn't tough, but to not play them ever at all? That just seems wrong.
