Dying of Exposure with Dan Mangan
Episode 1: Wesley Schultz - “Keep your own score”
Hear my lengthy chat with Wesley Schultz about the early days of The Lumineers (including a song from his pre-Lumineers band 6Cheek).
We talk about maintaining a sense of wonder when creating, epic fails on stage, how adversity can be viewed as enriching your origin story, how constructive feedback can be painful but important as a young artist, his return to faith as an adult, his aversion to the term "work/life balance", and how powerful it can be to seek validation from your own gut rather than affirmation from the external world.
This episode features a surprise needle drop of "God Is" by The Secret Beach.
If you enjoy this podcast, PLEASE review it, rate it, like it, follow it, share it - do whatever makes sense. It really helps.
Thank you and enjoy!

Ps. This conversation was recorded back in 2024 when I was just teasing out the idea and concept for this podcast. In our chat, Wes mentions his brother Sam. Tragically, Sam suddenly passed away recently. I considered editing the episode to not mention Sam, but decided to leave it as is. I really appreciate the reverence with which Wes speaks of Sam, and how his brother’s support has been so meaningful to him in his artistic pursuits.
