"What the hell is wrong with everybody right now?"

I wish I could show you how my 18 month old dances to this song, but he has requested a moratorium on social media (and for good reason - it's a zoo out there). I'm beginning to think that maybe he doesn't really get the lyrics. It's like he doesn't understand even the basic principles of juxtaposition.

The world is on tilt. 30 Helens agree. 

TROUBLED MIND is about the struggle to maintain any kind of mental equilibrium in the day-to-day as we are bombarded with fake news, sensationalized swipe-culture and increased access to the woes of the world. As the inflation of urgency increases, so does our capacity and appetite for it. I can only speak for myself, but I feel it every day.

This is also, without question, my most dance-able song to date, and I wanted to indulge that whim with the lyric video. I thought it would be funny to see people whose body language was in complete contrast to the lyrics - both in denial of the troubled mind, as well as in defiance against it. Thanks to Ben Clarkson for adding the special extra touches.

In the weeks leading up to the release of TROUBLED MIND, I teased the artwork on Instagram Stories with some silly pictures of myself or others with their heads on fire. Instead of using real fire (which is dangerous), I used emojis (which are ridiculous). I suppose that I sort of hoped that some people would join me in the silliness, but I cannot believe the creativity and enthusiasm with which people have indulged me. So, thanks for that. Since the song went live on Friday, I've seen babies, dogs & impressionist paintings exhibiting troubled minds - even videos of people dancing and imitating the music video.

If you're thinking to yourself, "Dan, isn't a silly meme game just more of the BS swipe culture the song is struggling to cope with?" - well, the answer is.. Probably?  What a tangled web we weave.

Lots of shows coming up this year, and more to be announced. I can also non-specifically promise that a new album will be announced before very long. I'm off on a short run supporting Icelandic superstar Kaleo this next week in a handful of Canadian and US cities!

I'm also thrilled to be heading to Europe in November with a wonderful songwriter named Laura Gibson from Portland, OR who also has an album coming out this year. We are label mates in Europe at the formidable City Slang. We're going to be sharing a band and maybe even playing in each others' bands! I know how to play Say It Ain't So on the electric guitar so if that's helpful to Laura, I'm here.
